Build Trust, Not A Trophy Case

Build Trust, Not A Trophy Case

I often read posts about bad horse trainers, coaches, and competition situations which cause me sadness and frustration. They seem to ask for help from strangers in online forums. What is possible if we start trusting our own abilities and asking for expert help when needed? What if that trust builds a relationship with our horses or our kids, partners, fill-in-the-blank? And what about when we spend time understanding them or understanding ourselves? What if we stopped racing to the next clinic/trainer/show/guru – just slow down and enjoy the ride? The ribbons are great, but they are sometimes at the expense of partnership. Imagine the rewards from sharing the spotlight, being part of a team, and enjoying our passion. And maybe, just maybe, the idea of temporary horses, and other relationship partners, would become less?

As a person who started training by age 6, the relationships I have built are far more important than the tricks and special gear. The skills can always be developed if you become aware of body language and watch horse people who are admirable even though they may not be winning the ribbons. Happy horses are easy to train. It’s not going to be a Disney movie – there is going to be hard work, wet saddle blankets, and tears of both frustration and joy. It means that creating your own champion is definitely worth the ride.

Sadness fills me when I see people who haven’t spent time doing the work winning ribbons on pre-programmed horses. The worst, all-too-common outcome is that the horse stops winning, is replaced, and then the new horse doesn’t behave or win and the person gets frustrated, taking it out on the new horse. Every relationship has to go through challenges and if the communication and trust are there on both sides, it can succeed.

Why not start teaching that relationships need communication, trust, boundaries, and self knowledge? Not just with horses. In order for this to work, adults might need to shelve their egos, and students might have to do some hard work and take responsibility for injuries which means not blaming anyone else including the horse. Success cannot always be instant. They might have to stay home, do some training, take some lessons, or become a working student and learn from the ground up from several different mentors who are worthy of respect, not necessarily a big name.

Avante

Mi Avante Garde – 2014 Section D Welsh buckskin gelding

Avante is one of the most stunning horses I have ever met, and as a 2 year old chose me. He would leave the herd to just hang out. He is like a big blond bodybuilder/bouncer that is afraid of spiders. We have played with positive reinforcement training and will continue and my goal is to train him tack free.

Stallions

While I currently can’t have stallions in my EAL program, their contributions are very significant.

Cobblehill Geordie -2005 Section D Welsh palomino stallion
Geordie has the most wonderful, gentlemanly spirit. He is present and kind and very giving. His babies share these special qualities. On top of that, his lineage boosts top performance in many disciplines, his sire a stong 3Day event competitor and his dam a successful upper level dressage mount

Mi Farmers Tan – 2018 Section D Welsh creamello stallion
Tanners first babies will be arriving mid June 2023 and I can’t wait to meet them! Tanner’s incredible pedigree combined with his unicorn looks are very attractive to anyone wanting to produce athletic, correct, kind, golden babies!

Donkey

He is very special boy who is sweet and kind, loves scratches, treat and seems to be a bit surprised when people are pleasant. His nibbles and hugs are unforgettable and his calming energy matches the vibration of Crystal Beach.

This special being came as a gift from a longtime family friend. He was known as Clementine but that never really suited him. I started referring to him as Donkey but said in Shreks voice. He responded to that and seemed to smile. So Donkey he became. If you check out Donkey as SpiritAnimal, he embodies all of the traits listed. He is the kindest, most generous soul, caring for all those lucky enough to be in his herd. He always seems a bit surprised to receive kindness from others and always expresses gratitude (Donkey nuzzles and kisses are the best). His original purpose was halter breaking bulls, and I got him to assist with halter training young horses. He was amazing at his job but always had a sense of sadness about him while he was doing it. As I have completely changed my training approach, his new role is that of protector, mentor, friend, and healer. He seems to enjoy his life much more.

Kosmos

Mi Kosmos – 2022 chestnut Section D Welsh Cob colt

Cobblehill Geordie x Mi Vermillion Skye

Kosmos is a full brother to Jorgia Rain and maturing to be very similar in temperament (they would make a stunning driving pair but I promised Jorgia she could stay). He is confident, kind , very curious, athletic and has been learning from the lesson herd. He looks like he will mature between 14.2 and 15hh. With his powerful bloodlines, I would love to see him become a breeding stallion. His beautiful chestnut color with lots of bling makes him stand out in a crowd. He is healthy, sound and ready to start learning new skills.
